Summer Shakespeare Project

June 29, 2011

M is taking on a Shakespeare reading project for the summer. Her goal is to read fifteen chosen Shakespeare plays. When she finishes each play she will be watching two movies, one accurate to the play and one based on the play. For example, she first read The Taming of the Shrew, and then watched the BBC movie by the same title with John Cleese and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Her list:

1) The Taming of the Shrew

2) King Henry IV

3) Romeo and Juliet

4) Othello

5) A Midsummer Night’s Dream

6) Julius Caesar

7) Measure for Measure

8 ) Cymbeline

9) Much Ado About Nothing

10) The Winter’s Tale

11) The Tempest

12) Hamlet

13) MacBeth

14) Twelfth Night

15) As You Like It

Brain Melting and Other Things

June 29, 2011

It’s summer (obviously), and most of the kids are taking a break.

E has been rather interested in reading about volcanoes, so of course I am happy to oblige. M is taking on a Shakespeare summer reading project. B is being harangued to finish up her work prior to enrolling in public high school this coming fall (shakes a fist at summer laziness). D is being a teen and playing his guitar. A is fervently playing outdoors most of each day, and discovering the world in typical toddler fashion.

I have been trying my hardest to devour books this summer, while planning for this fall. In other words, melting my brain. I am currently reading The Well Trained Mind . I have been extremely surprised. This is a popular book in the world of homeschooling, but I really thought it wouldn’t fit my style, as it is about classical education. However, it is full of useful information, and I am getting way more out of it than I expected. There is a ton of information, so every time I read it for a while, I get exhausted (hence the brain-melting)! You will all be graced with my review after a while. 😉

I am enjoying the summer, as I always do. I enjoy having all of my kids at home.

There is a Christian slant to this book, however that does not detract from its usefulness and resources.

Real-Life Homeschooling

June 29, 2011

Real-Life HomeschoolingReal-Life Homeschooling by Rhonda Barfield
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I imagine this would be more interesting for people that are newer to homeschooling. For me, it was mostly information i already knew.
If I was new to it all, I probably would have rated it higher!

Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It

June 29, 2011

Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates And What You Can Do About ItScattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates And What You Can Do About It by Gabor Mate
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is absolutely amazing. Dr Mate has such insight (being an ADHD patient himself, and father of kids with ADHD). The book is raw and funny, and extremely enlightening.
I found myself crying while reading almost every chapter of this book. The true recognition of what a person who suffers from ADHD experiences was at once a relief and gut-wrenching!
I cannot give this book enough stars.
